On January 1st, 2019, the Ministry of Culture of Cusco introduced new regulations to protect the city of Machu Picchu for future generations. The primary purpose of the new regulations is to more strictly control the number of visitors to Machu Picchu, thereby reducing the impact of tourism on the site.
As of January 1st, 2019, all entrance tickets to Machu Picchu will have an entry time printed on them. Entry times will be hourly from 06:00 to 14:00, and entrance will only be permitted at the time indicated on the visitor’s ticket. Entrance at an earlier or later time WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.
To better facilitate the new system so that people only arrive near to their allotted entry time, the CONSETTUR bus transport service from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu has been updated. Visitors may now only board a bus according to the entry time printed on their Machu Picchu ticket. Controlling the bus service in this way will avoid unnecessary queues and overcrowding at the entry gates to the city.
To further assist, the railway companies PERURAIL and INCARAIL will also distribute information on the new entry time system at its ticket offices.
The DIRECTION OF CULTURE OF CUSCO, CONSETTUR, PERURAIL and INCARAIL wishes to make the visit to Machu Picchu an unforgettable experience for all local, national and foreign tourists. By visitors following a few simple rules for visiting the city, its conservation for future generations is assured.
Be aware that due this new regulation of Machu Picchu as of January 1st, 2019, your entry time to visit Machu Picchu city doing an alternative trek would start at 8 AM. Therefore, there is no way to be at Machu Picchu for sunrise, but this entry time will maximize your time to visit Machu Picchu and hike up to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain.
